Puppy & Kitten Exams at Hilltop Animal Hospital

In the first few weeks of life, a puppy or kitten’s immune system requires additional support. Pet owners need to tend to the specific needs of their puppies or kittens. What to Expect During Your First Exam

A veterinarian will look for signs of injury or abnormalities during a pet’s first exam. A vet will perform a nose to tail inspection and give pet owner’s helpful advice, such as dietary recommendations, during an initial exam. They will also talk about the vaccinations needed to support a pet’s health during their first year.

What Is Included in a Puppy or Kitten Exam?

Pet owners receive a number of services in an exam for a puppy or kitten. Vets near Evans Ga will give the pet their first vaccines during an office visit, along with flea and heartworm prevention at no additional charge. A veterinarian will also perform a fecal examination to look for any intestinal parasites and give a kitten or dog a dose of dewormer.

All new puppies and kittens are examined for congenital abnormalities. During an initial visit or follow up exams, pet owners can discuss any behavioral or training issues they may be having and receive expert guidance to address many common problems. Your veterinarian will take their time to get to your pet and provide additional recommendations as needed to support their health.

How to Prepare for the Exam

Give yourself and your pet extra time to get to an appointment to reduce any stress they may feel on coming to an unfamiliar place. Calmly talk to and stroke your pet to relax them during a visit, as appropriate.

You may choose to complete necessary forms at home or while you wait in the reception area. Feel free to ask any questions you may have to our staff by contacting our office during veterinarian hours.

Know the Vaccination Schedule for Your Puppy or Kitten

Puppies and kittens need to begin building their own antibodies at 6-8 weeks of age. Core and non-core vaccinations are useful in supporting the unique needs of your pet at different stages of life.

At 8 weeks of age, puppies should receive their DHPP and Start Heartworm Prevention. Kittens at this age will receive FVRCP and Start Heartworm Prevention. Vaccinations continue with the DHPP booster for puppies and FVRCP booster and FeLV vaccine at 12 weeks. At 16 weeks, puppies will receive the DHPP booster and Rabies vaccine, while kittens receive the FVRCP booster, FELV booster and Rabies vaccine.
